Part of my After viewing Karan Johar's first two films, I was very impressed with the young writer-director and his stable of regular cast members. This, his third feature outing, once again has Shah Rukh Khan headlining with Rani Mukerji, adding Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan and Kirron Kher to the established ensemble that includes the ever-popular Amitabh Bachchan and a cameo by the luscious Kajol as an uncredited piano dancer. What's different here from Johar's previous efforts is his filming the bulk of the story in New York. He used Britain as a location in his second film, but only as a secondary setting. Having the main characters all be NRIs (non-resident Indians) means the supporting cast had •. I gather this is an unusual Bollywood film because it deals with infidelity and divorce, but I appreciated that the characters had nuance and shades of grey.
No one was completely blameless in the two married couples. The main negative? SRK plays an injured former football star with a pronounced limp, and thus leaves most of the dancing to Abhishek Bachchan. Favorite scene has to be when Dev and Maya are in a bed store and she tries to teach him how to massage and seduce his wife, by showing him what to do. And then she suddenly stops as she realizes how it's affecting her to touch him -- when she feels nothing sexually for her husband. Once you see the movie, it's mandatory to laugh your ass off reading Imaan Sheik's hilarious Accurate and Honest Summary of KANK: •.
I almost everyone I know hates Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna but I love this movie! I honestly think that KANK is Karan Johar's best work so far. The first reason I hear when I ask others about why they don't like KANK is that it's a movie about two people cheating on their spouses. But that is just the plotline of the movie, not the theme of the movie. I think the most basic theme of KANK is the same as that of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania: people aren't perfect, relationships are perfect. Though most people don't, I love the way that Karan Johar designed the main characters in KANK. First I want to discuss, Dev's family.
